Incoming Students
For incoming students, the first step is to list Shepard (South Mid-Quads Hall or Shepard Residential College, NOT Shepard Hall!) as one of your top housing choices. At the end of your housing application, there will be a section of short-answer questions that you must answer if you are applying to any residential college, including Shepard.
Don't be intimidated by the questions! This is not a college application, so don't feel like you have to pour your soul out in under 100 words. Write a different answer for each of the residential colleges you're applying to!

Current Students
For current undergraduate students at Northwestern, you can join Shepard RC by becoming a non-resident member ("non-res"). By joining Shepard as a non-res, you will join a community of diverse, friendly students whom you can meet through events like firesides, munchies, and midnight ultimate frisbee. You also get a key that lets you into the building.
Maintaining a non-res status requires annual payment of dues, which are $40 for a whole academic year*. That's much less than what residents pay annually.
*Due to the COVID-19 Crisis, all non-resident dues across the Residential College system are $12 per quarter, with no building or facility access.

- If you are a student who was supposed to live in SMQ, your non-resident dues are being sponsored by the University.
- If you are a student with a housing exception or an upperclassmen who was supposed to live in Shepard, you will not have to pay dues.
- If you are a student who was not planning to live in SMQ or on campus, but still wants to non-res, your non-resident dues are $12 per quarter. If this presents a financial barrier to you, you can apply for a fee waiver on the application.
